First of all, you don't need to switch in order to use Apple Mail. I use Apple Mail and get both my yahoo mail and gmail as a pop account, as well as email from other servers. Of course, gmail has some other advantages. It's fast and simple. Web page loads quickly.
I would set up Pop access in yahoo first and just import your yahoo mail there. Then you'll always have it. You have to set up pop access within yahoo mail (there is a page for it). you check an "Enable Pop Access" button. The instructions for using this in Mail are easy.
